The pandemic and extended recruiting dead period hurt the recruitment of thousands of players around the country, especially ones that play at small schools off the beaten path. Suffolk (Va.) Nansemond Suffolk Academy is certainly off the beaten path but George Pettaway's talent and production grabbed the attention of college coaches from all over the country. The Rivals250 running back started accumulating offers in the spring of 2019 but it wasn't until his abbreviated junior season this past spring that people started to understand just how good a prospect the Virginia native is.
Pettaway didn't narrow down his offer sheet until May and took visits to North Carolina, Florida, Penn State, and Michigan in June, only using two of his official visits. In the end, North Carolina won him over with their on field success and his comfort level with the players and environment on campus.
